This Indian leopard's camouflage allows it to hide in plain sight, vital for its survival. Only catching their prey 20% of the time, selection is important. The nilgai is its chosen target, an antelope up to three times the leopards body weight. The ability to hide and wait allows for the perfect surprise attack. Deep-sea creatures such as squids and octopuses can switch on a “camouflage mode” to hide from predatory fish and have cephalopod skin. Both animals are covered in sacs of a red pigment, called chromatophores, which they can expand or contract at will. Under normal ambient light, the sacs are shrivelled and the animals are largely transparent.
