The nose boom is an iconic instrument that you’ll often see on flight test aircraft. The vanes measure the angle of aircraft movement relative to the surrounding air, while the pitot tube measures the airspeed. Because the shape of the airplane disturbs the airflow, nose booms must be placed at the front of the aircraft.
