Listen the backing gland nut before operating a multi position service valve. From Emerson " This valve uses a packing material with a gland nut that can be identified by the wrench flats. Before activating the valve stem, loosen the brass gland nut (usually with a 7/16 wrench). This will lessen the amount of packing material being removed by moving the valve stem and help prevent the valve stem from leaking. After valve stem is seated (front or back), torque brass gland nut to ~ 6-8ft/lbs." #lo
